Stede Bonnet called the "gentleman pirate" was one of the most interesting, most unlikely, but least successful sea pirates. Bonnet was a retired English army Major, (well into his middle-age) owning a profitable sugar plantation in Barbados. For reasons unknown he became a pirate.
He legally purchased his own ship, while all other pirates had either stolen their ships or obtained them by mutiny. He hired about seventy sailors on salary paid from his own pocket. He briefly sailed with Edward Teach (Blackbeard), until almost by accident was captured by William Rhett who was sent after other pirates. Bonnet was hanged in December of 1718.
