Edward "Blackbeard" Teach was the most feared and most despised pirates of all time. Some accounts claim that he had as many as fourteen wives. Blackbeard often fought with, or simply showed him self wearing multiple swords, knives, and pistols.
During battle, he would use lighted matches to burn the woven hemp from his enormous black beard. This image, which he cultivated, has made him the premier image of the seafaring pirate.
Balckbeard had captured over 40 ships during his piratical career, and had been the cause of the deaths of hundereds of people. Although Blackbeard's lawless career lasted only a few years, his fearsome reputation has long outlived him.
